This pendant, reminiscent of flowing rivers of lava, is named after Madame Pele, the Hawaiian Fire and Volcano Goddess. Scholars of Hawaiian culture point out that the honorific name for Pele (pronounced PEH-leh) is Pelehonuamea, incorporating the deity’s sacred connection to the earth, the oceans and the red color of lava.
made of: torch fired enamel over copper, sterling silver, and an 8mm round rose cut garnet, with an 18" oxidized sterling silver foxtail chain with secure lobster claw clasp.
dimensions: pendant is approximately 1.5" in diameter
techniques: the metalwork holding the enamel piece in place is hand fabricated, while the pendant has been hand-shaped by hammering and then torch-fired in various layers of enamel to achieve the final result. the center stone is prong set, and the central enamel piece is held in place by sturdy prongs but spins freely around the stone so it is not in one fixed position.
